History: | The East India Company was established on 31 December 1600 when Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to 'the governor and company of merchants of London trading to the East Indies'. By a series of charters the Company gained exclusive rights to trade to the 'Indies'. Over a period of 250 years the Company underwent several substantial changes in its functions and by the 1830s its commercial functions had largely been replaced and it exercised responsibility for the government of India under the supervision of the Board of Control, until 1858 when, following the India Act of 1858, it was succeeded by the India Office. |
