Date: 1858-1947
History: In 1858, by the India Act of 1858, the East India Company (established in 1600) and the Board of Control of the East India Companies were replaced by the India Office as a single new department of state which functioned under the Secretary of State for India to oversee the colonial administration of British India. The Secretary of State who was formally advised by the Council of India, which was mostly drawn from the old Board. In 1937 a separate Burma Office was established when Burma was separated from British India. In 1947 when India and Pakistan achieved independence, the India Office was abolished and responsibility for the UK's relations with the two new countries was transferred to the Commonwealth Relations Office (formerly the Dominions Office); relations for the Persian Gulf sheikhdoms passed to the Foreign Office. In January 1948, responsibility for relations for Burma was also passed to the Foreign Office.
