History: The United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) was established 1983 with responsibilities for the maintenance of a central register of nurses, midwives & health visitors; also empowered to set out rules governing the education and training requirements for admission to the register. In April 2002 the UKCC ceased to exist and its functions were taken over by a new Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
