History: OFGAS was set up under the Gas Act 1986 as the independent regulatory body for the gas industry in England, Scotland and Wales. Its functions were to promote competition in the gas industry and to protect customers interests in relation to prices, security of supply and quality of services. In 1999 the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM) was created to bring together the responsibilities of OFGAS and the Office of Electricity Regulation.
