History: | Formed in 1909 when the Excise Department of the Inland Revenue was amalgamated with the Board of Customs under one board with responsibilities for the collection and administration of customs and excise duties and VAT, and advice to the Chancellor of the Exchequer on any matters connected with them; the protection of UK and business interests through the control of imported and exported goods; and the prevention of the illegal import (and export) of socially unacceptable or politically sensitive materials. From 18 April 2005, the Board of Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise merged to become HM Revenue and Customs. |
