History: | On 3 January 1918 the Air Ministry was set up (in succession to the Air Board) under a Secretary of State for Air, advised by an Air Council. The Ministry's first task was to plan for the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service to become from 1 April 1918 the Royal Air Force. The Ministry then had responsibilities for the development of military aviation and of the aviation component of the armed forces. On 1 April 1964 the Air Ministry was absorbed into the unified Ministry of Defence. |
