Date: 1919-1945
History: Established following the assumption of civil aviation responsibilities by the Air Ministry under the Air Navigation Act of 1919. In 1920 it was known as the Department of the Controller-General of Civil Aviation and had responsibility for the Meteorological Office, aerodromes and licensing and accident investigation. The Meteorological Office passed to the control of the Secretary of the Air Ministry in 1922. In the mid 1930s the department was expanded, but, under the Air Navigation Act 1936, certain regulatory functions were delegated to the newly-constituted Air Registration Board. In 1945 the Civil Aviation Department's functions were transferred to a new Ministry of Civil Aviation.
