History: Robert Cecil was a son of Elizabeth I's chief minister William Cecil, Lord Burghley. He was knighted in 1591 and was Secretary of State from 1596 to 1608. He secured the accession of James VI of Scotland to the English throne in 1603. He was created Baron Cecil 1603, Viscount Cranborne 1604 and Earl of Salisbury 1605.
