Diplomat, 1936-1938 and 1947-1972. 3rd Secretary at the Berlin Embassy at the time of his resignation in 1938, but later ambassador to the European Communities, 1963-1965; Deputy Under-Secretary of State, FO and FCO, 1965-1972. Headed at official level the UK delegation to negotiate entry to the European Communities, 1969-1972. First Chairman of the Intervention Board for Agricultural Produce, 1972-1974.
