Colonel of 15th Foot 1756; captured Louisbourg, Cape Breton Island 1758. Commander-in-chief British forces in North America, and conquest of Canada 1758-1763. Lieutenant general 1765; field marshal 1796. Governor of Virginia, 1763, Governor of Guernsey, 1770. Commander in Chief at home, 1778-1782 and 1793-1795. Created 1st Baron Amherst in 1776.
