Title: King of Great Britain and Ireland
History: Second son of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of Denmark. Became heir in Jan 1892 on death of elder brother Albert, Duke of Clarence, and created Duke of York in 1892. In July 1893 he married Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, formerly engaged to his brother. During 1901 he became Duke of Cornwall (Jan) and was created Prince of Wales (Nov). Succeeded to the throne in May 1910; crowned 22 June 1911. During World War I, he abandoned all German titles for himself and his family, and by Royal Proclamation, 1917, changed the British royal family's name from the German Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the English Windsor. Died 20 Jan 1936 and succeeded by eldest son, Edward VIII.
