History:	Astronomer and scientist. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, 1818. In 1834 commenced the first systematic magnetic survey of the British Isles. From 1839 superintended the system of magnetic observations. General Secretary of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1839-1859. Supervised another magnetic survey of the British Isles, 1858-1861, after which he was elected President of the Royal Society.
