History: | Memoirs of Dorothy Robson. Born in Hull in 1900, Dorothy met Jimmy Robson, a miner from Ashington during the First World War. They married in 1920 and she moved to the North East. She became more and more involved in politics and following the General Strike of 1926 she joined the Labour party and was elected secretary. Moving to Morpeth, she became a champion of local social issues, in particular for a better standard of housing and was elected to the town council in 1939, the first woman and the first Socialist to be so. Leaving the council in 1947 she remained active in local politics. Dorothy Robson died in 1984. |
