History: He was born to Commander John Francis Tottenham, RN and Laura Ellen Dodd Janverin on 31 July 1873. The youngest of 14 children. He attended Clifton College, Bristol before graduating from Queen's College, Oxford with a MA. In 1896 he passed the Indian Civil Service examination and joined the Madras Presidency in 1897. He was made a Campanion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1922 and knight in 1928, when he retired. He was then the Administrator of Pudukkottai State during the minority of the ninth Rajah, before being appointed Dewan, when the Rajah received full powers in 1944. He died on 13 December, 1946 in Pudukkottai. Source: Obituary, "The Times", 16 December, 1946, p7
