History:

Descent of manor

Tyldesley was held of William le Boteler by Hugh son of Henry de Tyldesley in 1212. The manor was divided by Henry de Tyldesley and parts were given to Hugh de Tyldesley and his brothers, Adam and Henry. The manor then subsequently descended through these branches of the Tyldesley family. The manor was sold in 1566 to Robert Worsley of Mossley and Christopher Anderton of Lostock. In 1572 a partition of the estates was made between Worsley and Anderton under which the latter took this manor.

In 1633 Anderton's grandson sold the manor to Francis Sherington. Then in 1684 the manor was sold to Alexander Radcliffe, John Parr and Peter Parr, Radcliffe taking one half and the Parrs the other half of the manor. From 1721-1752 moieties of the manor were acquired and reunited by Samuel Clowes and his son. In 1810 Samuel Clowes sold the manor to Robert Haldane Bradshaw. In 1836 the manor was conveyed to Lord Francis Egerton, the first Earl of Ellesmere. The manor remained with the family; Francis Charles Granville Egerton, the third Earl of Ellesmere, being lord of the manor in 1907.
