Date: 1200-1834
History:

Descent of manor

Before 1212 the manor of Rochdale had been given to the lord of Clitheroe and was held by Roger de Lacy. It descended like Clitheroe, and thus came to the Earls and Dukes of Lancaster, and finally to the Crown. In 1625 Charles I sold the manor to trustees for the Earl of Holderness, who immediately sold it afterwards to Sir Robert Heath. Sir Robert sold it to Sir John Byron in 1638. It remained in the Byron family until 1823 when Lord Byron sold it to James Dearden. The manor remained with the Dearden family, James Griffith-Dearden being lord in 1911.

Nature of jurisdiction

Manor courts were held at Whitsuntide into the 20th century.
