History: | Descent of manor Hale with Halewood formed one of the six berewicks of West Derby in 1066. Roger the Poitevin granted Hale's tithes to the abbey of St. Martin of Séez in 1094. The manor remained in the king's hands during the 12th century and in 1203 King John granted it to Richard de Meath. A dispute arose, whereby a third of the manor was granted to the Waltons as overlords. Before 1266 Robert de Ferrers, Earl of Derby then made Nicholas de la Hose mesne lord of Hale, superior to the Waltons, under whom were the descendants of Richard de Meath. Nicholas de la Hose then sold his rights to Robert de Holand, who thus became superior lord of Hale. Numerous disputes arose, and in 1321 William de Walton sold his rights to Adam de Ireland. The lordship of Robert de Holand descended like his other manors. Passing to the Lovels, it was forfeited in 1487, and given to the first Earl of Derby, of whom the Irelands continued to hold the manors of Hale and Halewood. On the death of Gilbert Ireland in 1675, the manor passed to his nephew, Gilbert Aspinwall, who died in 1717. In 1733, Hale passed to Mary Aspinall, wife of Isaac Greene of Childwall. On partition of the inheritance between their three daughters, Hale descended to the Blackburne family. It remained with the Blackburnes, Col. Robert Ireland Blackburne being lord in 1907.
