History: | Descent of manor The manor of Moston was held by the Moston family of the Chethams. About 1400 the Mostons were succeeded by the Radcliffes, who continued to hold the manor until 1547. The Chethams retained lordship of Moston until the death of Edward Chetham in 1769. His estates were divided between his sisters; Moston passed to Mary, wife of Samuel Clowes, and descended to their grandson, James Hilton. From 1851, the lords of the manor were the trustees of James's son, Samuel Chetham Hilton. Sources A History of the County of Lancaster, Volume 4 (1911), pp.264-270. |
