Descent of manor

In 1212 Little Bolton was held of Randle de Marsey by Roger de Bolton. The Bolton family continued to hold the manor until 1610, when Richard Bolton transferred it to Thomas Ireland and Thomas Heaton. The manor descended in the Ireland family until 1670, when it was sold to Thomas Marsden, whose heirs sold it to John Moss in 1716. Little Bolton was later inherited by John Gartside, who died in 1817, having bequeathed this manor and other estates to his nephew Thomas Tipping. Henry Thomas Gartside-Tipping was lord of the manor in 1911.

Nature of jurisdiction

The township of Little Bolton was governed by the officers appointed annually at the manor court leet.
