Date: 1835 - 1851
History: Highway Boards were created by the Highways Act 1835, which permitted parishes to join together to create districts responsible for the maintenance of highways. They were abolished in 1894 when their responsibilities were transferred to urban and rural district councils. The Monkwearmouth Shore Board covered just the parish of Monkwearmouth Shore and was established in March 1848. The Board was subsumed into Sunderland Corporation under the Borough of Sunderland Act 1851.
