History: | Ware Union Workhouse was founded by the Ware Board of Guardians in 1840. It was located in Collett Road, Ware. It was later known as Ware Poor Law Institution. It came under the control of Hertfordshire County Council in 1930, when it became known as Ware Public Assistance Institution.Following the creation of the National Health Service in 1948 it became known as Western House Hospital. It was managed by the Hertford Group No. 1 Hospital Management Committee of the North East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board. It offered over 100 beds until the early 1970s. In 1974 it passed to the East Herts District Health Authority in the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. The old workhouse part of the hospital was closed in 1984. In the late 1980s and early 1990s it served as a geriatric hospital, having 72 beds for patients. In 1992 It became part of the East Herts Health NHS Trust and was closed shortly afterwards. In 1993-1994 the building was converted into flats. |
