History: Spen Primitive Methodist Church opened on 18 April 1867. By the early 1880s the size of the village and of the society had grown and so a new chapel was built and formally opened on 3 April 1885. Following Methodist Union in 1932 it became known as East Street Methodist Church. In 1947 the Front Street Methodist Church at High Spen (formerly Wesleyan Methodist) ceased to be used for worship and the congregation joined the East Street society. As a result of this amalgamation the society became known simply as High Spen Methodist Church. The Church closed in about 2002. This society belonged to White-le-Head Primitive Methodist Circuit. In 1899 this was renamed Burnopfield Primitive Methodist Circuit. In 1935 there was a re-organisation of the circuits in the Gateshead area and the society joined the newly created Gateshead West Methodist Circuit, which was renamed Blaydon Methodist Circuit in 1961.
