Richard Slater Milnes (1759-1804) of Fryston (Yorkshire, West Riding), descended from a Derbyshire family, acquired property at Great Houghton (Yorkshire, West Riding) through his wife. Their son Robert Pemberton Milnes (1784-1858) married in 1808 Henrietta Monckton, daughter of the 4th Viscount Galway and granddaughter of Pemberton Milnes of Bawtry (Yorkshire, West Riding). It was Richard Monckton Milnes (1809-85), son of R.P. and the Hon. Henrietta Milnes, who was created Baron Houghton in 1863. The 2nd Baron Houghton, who inherited the Crewe estates from his uncle, took the name of Crewe-Milnes and was created Earl of Crewe in 1895 and Marquess of Crewe in 1911. All the peerage titles became extinct on his death in 1945.
