History: Septimus Oswald, born 18 October 1823, was the seventh son of Joseph Oswald, worsted manufacturer of Cannon Street, Gateshead and Tyne Bridge End, Newcastle. After being articled to Andrew Oliver, the Newcastle architect and surveyor, Septimus was appointed assistant to Henry Welsh, county surveyor for Northumberland, beginning his own independent practice in St Nicholas' Buildings, Newcastle in 1855. Septimus' son Joseph was taken into the partnership in 1876 and in 1891 Septimus retired due to ill health and died in November that year. The practice moved to Worswick Chambers, Worswick Street, Newcastle, where it was to remain until 1955, before finally moving to 19 Archbold Terrace until closure in the 1960s. Septimus Oswald's grandson had become senior partner in 1937. Septimus Oswald was a founder member of the Northern Architectural Association and its president in 1880, and was also an active member of the Newcastle Society of Antiquaries.
