Sir Richard Wallace (1818-1890) was the illegitimate son of Richard Seymour-Conway, 4th Marquess of Hertford (1800-1870). Wallace inherited his father's collection in 1870 and bought Hertford House from the 5th Marquess of Hertford. After the death of Lady Wallace in 1897 the house and its contents were bequeathed to the nation as the Wallace Collection.
