Date: 1888-1967
History: The National Union of Miners was established in 1863 and comprised the Durham Miners Association, The Northumberland Miners Mutual Confident Association, the Amalgamated Association of South Staffordshire and the South Wales Sliding Scale Associations. In the 1880s control of the union passed to the Northumberland and Durham leaders and by 1902 only these two districts remained members. They had been united in their opposition to the eight-hour day, which would have reduced the hours of boys, but increased the hours of hewers, but in 1907 Northumberland joined the Miners' Federation of Great Britain, which had accepted the eight-hour day.The Federation was renamed the National Union of Mineworkers in 1945 and the Northumberland Miners Mutual Confident Association became the Northumberland Area of the NUM. Burradon Colliery was owned by Burradon & Coxlodge Coal Co. Ltd. until 1929, then Hazelrigg & Burradon Coal Co. Ltd. until the vesting of the National Coal Board in 1947. It closed in 1975.
