Title: Cabinet Office and predecessors: Historical Section: Registered Files (HS and other Series)
Description:

This series contains the registered files of the Cabinet Office Historical Section. It includes periodical progress reports, annual estimates and correspondence on the management of the official histories programme, and various subjects, mainly Second World War but also the East Africa Campaign History (1914-1918). There is also much information about documentary sources, British and foreign, assembled by and for official historians.

Date: 1906-1988
Arrangement:

By former reference.

The early historical Section files were within the Committee of Imperial Defence file scheme: no registry list survives from this period.

From 1937 until 1966 the filing system of the Cabinet Office was based on a hierarchical tree, whereby broad subject areas were allocated numbers, and topics within these subjects were allocated sub-numbers. These in turn could be sub-divided twice, making a maximum of a four number file reference.

Series 7 was used for papers on the completion of the WW1 official histories; the HS was allocated series 68 (Military histories 1939-45), 69 (Civil Histories 1939-45), 70 (General Histories 1939-45), 71 Official Histories 1939-45). Series 70 was used for wider matters related to the OH programme, and for printing and publication of the OH series. Series 71 was used for the appointment of the advisory panels.

In 1966 the Cabinet Office reorganised its filing system, but some of the war histories files continued on their 1937 hierarchical numbering for several years.
