The Scientific Advisory Committee was set-up in October 1940 under Lord Hankey (Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster), to advise the government on scientific matters generally and to bring new developments to its notice. It also had the duty of advising the departments on the selection of individuals for scientific appointments. It continued to serve throughout the war and from the beginning of 1943 was chaired by Sir Henry Dale (President of the Royal Society). Meetings were held on a variety of subjects, and attended by a number of persons from outside government service. |
