Arrangement:

During the 1990s, efforts were made to identify and list all the maps held by the Public Record Office Library (whether in the library rooms or in the public reading rooms) according to provenance. Items identified as being of Admiralty, Colonial Office, State Paper Office, Treasury or War Office provenance were added to ADM 7, CO 1047, SP 112, T 63 and WO 78 respectively. Other items were sorted and now constitute the ZMAP series.

Custodial history: At various dates and from various provenances, the Public Record Office has acquired a miscellany of maps and plans, which were placed in the Public Record Office Library. Here they remained, largely inaccessible, until 1977, when the bound atlas volumes were moved to the open access shelves in the Map Room at Kew.
