Catalogue description Gateshead County Borough

The Borough of Gateshead was created by Order in Council, under the Municipal Boroughs Act, 1835. Following the Public Health Act, 1848 the Borough acquired the powers of a Local Board of Health in 1851 and these were enhanced on 5 March 1873 when, under the Public Health Act 1872 it became an Urban Sanitary Authority. It also became a Burial Board in 1859. On 4 September 1889 the Borough became a County Borough and Urban Sanitary Authority which it remained until 1894 when by the Local Government Act, Sanitary Authorities were abolished and their powers transferred.

Following the 1902 Education Act, the County Borough became an Education Authority, and in 1919 acquired housing powers. Following the abolition of Boards of Guardians in 1930 Gateshead inherited responsibility for poor relief, but in 1948, with the creation of the National Health Service, responsibility for the asylum at Stannington, and some aspects of welfare passed to the new Hospital Management Committees.

In 1974, under the 1972 Local Government Act Gateshead County Borough merged with Blaydon, Felling, Ryton and Whickham Urban Districts and the parishes of Birtley and Lamesley formerly part of Chester le Street Rural District to form Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council (see MD/GA).
