Administrative / biographical background:

Henry Houston Bonnell was a life member of the Brontë Society and collected Brontë material from the 1890s. During his lifetime this collection was considered one of the most valuable and representative in existence. He expressed a wish to see much of his collection return to Haworth and when he died in 1926 his wife carried this out. She made a further donation of the remains of his collection to the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, in the 1960s.
