    Administrative History:

The Tolkien Society is an independent, non-profit making educational charity (registered number 273809). It was established in 1969 to promote interest in the life and works of the author and philologist Professor J.R.R Tolkien C.B.E., 1892-1973. This is achieved through the organisation of regular seminars and study workshops, educational outreach and publications, including the Society's two principal journals, Amon Hen and Mallorn. In addition to this, the Society organises two national meetings each year. The Annual General Meeting and Dinner is held each Spring at a different venue; the Dinner a formal literary event, with guest speakers. The Oxonmoot weekend, held each August in Oxford, where Tolkien lived and is now buried, is a less formal affair, and affords members an opportunity to visit places of interest, for example the haunts of the 'Inklings', the group to which both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis belonged.

The Society enjoys an international membership, and many members have formed local groups known as 'smials'. These meet on a regular basis and often organise events and produce publications.

A Committee of elected officers oversees the everyday running of the Society, and its various functions, including maintaining the Society's Archive. This collects material relating to, inspired by or produced as 'critical responses' to Tolkien, his works, and other works of fantasy fiction and philology. The Archive will have a permanent home in a Tolkien Memorial Centre, which is currently being planned.
