Bell and Black established 1839, Bell and Black Ltd. formed to acquire it in 1876. The Bell and Black Match Co. Ltd. was formed in 1881 (with Gilbert Bartholemew as Secretary), taking over Bell and Black Ltd; Dixon, Son and Evans (Manchester); Bellerby and Son Ltd. (York); and John Jex Long (Glasgow).
