The Whitby Mutual Marine Iron Steamship Insurance Company and the Whitby Iron Steamship Insurance Company were established in 1873 and incorporated as limited companies in 1876 for the mutual insurance of steamships insured by the members of the companies. Although they had an extensive business, both locally and nationally, the last policy issued was 1942-1943. In 1964 an Extraordinary General Meeting resolved to wind up the companies, and they were liquidated in 1967.

Although the two clubs were separate companies, they had the same directors, managers and auditors, and appear to have been run concurrently. In some cases separate record series run for each company, but in others the same volume will cover both: it has therefore been decided that records have a shared provenance, and not to divided them on formal lines of company demarcation.
