Administrative / biographical background:

The Royal National Sanatorium, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth was built in 1855 at the cost of around £15,000, to the designs of Sir A M Blomfield. It contained 97 beds for consumptive patients and for those suffering other diseases of the chest. It was almost entirely supported by voluntary contributions. In 1948 the Bournemouth and Poole Sanatoria Hospital Management Committee took over control. For the minutes and sub-committee minutes 1948 to 1958 see NG/NHS/HM 1, which include references to the hospital. In 1958 the Bournemouth and Poole Sanatoria Hospital Management Committee amalgamated with the Bournemouth and East Dorset Hospital Committee and references can be found in NG/NHS/HM 2/1/10-24. By then the hospital was known as the Royal National. It became a NHS hospital in 1974.
