Administrative / biographical background:

These deeds relate mainly to the career of Henry Grainger, eldest son of John Grainger of Grange, High Ireby, yeoman. He left Ireby for Manchester and London as a dry-salter, but built up an estate by diligent purchases until the 1860s, when he was forced to raise P20,000 and within the year (1866) to sell. However, the estate was sold only in 1870, by auction, to John Boustead, late of Whitehaven, Army agent. By 1904 it had grown from 990 acres (1866) to 1876 acres. In 1906 it was bought by James Gurney
