Catalogue description Inspeximus of the tenor of a petition addressed to us in Chancery by Richard Boughton, made as follows: (the document quoted is in English). To the right Reverend father in God, the Bishop of Winchester, Chancellor of England: Richard Boughton beseeches your lordship that whereas Thomas Reason and John Willenhale were seized of the Manor of Litellalford and 10 messuages, 10 yardlands and 12 acres of meadow in Litil Herborowe, Newbold on Avon and Long Lalford, and by their deed gave the manor to Geoffrey Allesley and Alianor his wife and the heirs of their bodies lawfully begotten, in fee tail: Richard is the heir of Geffrey and Alianor, by force of the said gift, as the son of Elizabeth, their daughter: the deed has been lost by Alianor wherefore Richard and his heirs by long process of time might by default of that deed be disinherited, without some remembrance being had thereof, during the life of Alianor, and other credible persons now alive, who have knowledge of it. Therefore he begs that the Bishop will grant the supplicant a writ of 'dedimus potestatem' to be directed to the Abbot of Killyngworth, the Abbot of Combe, William Felding and Thomas Bate, giving them power on this behalf to call the said Alianore and others to enquire and examine by all the ways and means by which it may best be known when the said gift and entail by deed was made by the said Thomas Reason and the said John, to Geffrey and Alianor in the form aforesaid. There follows an Inspeximus of the writ sent to the Abbots of Kelyngworth and Combe, William Felding and Thomas Bate: Henry, by the grace etc. The writ informs them of Richard's position and gives them power and authority to inquire diligently into all aspects of the case. And they are to return the findings of their inquiry speedily to Chancery, 24th October, 35 Henry VI. Inspeximus that endorsed on the writ was the following: We, the Abbots of Kelyngworth and Combe, William Fylding and Thomas Bate, by virtue of this writ on 20th February, 35 Henry VI, at Litil Lalford summoned Alianor Allesley, now wife of Geoffrey, and others, to our court, and examined them concerning the matters related in the bill attached to this writ, which we return to the Court of Chancery. Inspeximus of the bill: Know all men etc. We, Thomas Reason, clerk, and John Willenhall, conveyed to Geoffrey Allesley and Alianor, his wife, the manor of Litil Lalford with appurtenances and all lands and tenements in Litul Heroorowe, Neubold on Avon and Long Lalford, which we had by the gift of Geoffrey: to hold the aforesaid to Geoffrey and Alianor and the heirs of their bodies legitimately etc., forever, of the chief lord of the fee for the customary services. And if they have no heir of their bodies, to the right heirs of Geoffrey forever. Given at Litil Lalford, 10th August, 1 Henry VI. Witnesses: John Malory, Simon Mallory, Thomas Baron and others. Alianor Allesley, being examined and sworn, says that Thomas Reason and John Willenhall were seised of the manor of Litil Lalford and 10 messuages 10 yardlands and 12 acres of meadow with their appurtenances in Little Herborowe, Newbold on Avon and Long Lalleford, by their deed dated 10th August, 1 Henry VI: it was conveyed to herself and Geoffrey in fee tail, which deed she, some variance and debate being between herself and Thomas Boughton, father of Richard, who had married her daughter Elizabeth, mother of Richard, burnt at the Abbey of Combe, which she has regretted since, and has an old copy of the deed which she showed us and delivered to Richard in our presence: the tenor is a good writing: John Willenhall, examined, says he and Thomas Reason, were seised of the manor and conveyed it to Geoffrey and Alianor in fee tail, and delivered seisin in the presence of John Hewet of Long Lalford and William Bussevile of Little Herborough, now alive. We have exemplified the above on the request of Richard Boughton. Given at Coventry 10th March, 35 Henry VI. Extracted by John Bate and Thomas Poe, clerks.; Seal: Royal Great; Seal; natural; tag.
