The first of these disbursements book covers first costs and voyages of the brig Ann (Feb 1787-Jan 1796) and brigantine Alliance (Sep 1800-Jan 1812); the other disbursements book covers voyages of brig Alliance (Dec 1811-Mar 1814) and ship William (May 1816-Jul 1840), including accounts relating to the loss of the Alliance and first costs of the William.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Ann by built in Whitby by Thomas Fishburn in 1787 for William Usherwood. By 1796 the owners were Stephen Brown of Whitby and John and James Burn of Sneaton. The Masters were Cornelius Usherwood, Stephen Burn and John Swan.

 

The Alliance was built in Whitby by Fishburn and Broderick in 1800 for William Usherwood, merchant, and Robert Usherwood, master mariner. She was lost on Hasebro' Sand in 1814 while on Transport Service, Captain John Usherwood and the crew being lost. The Masters were Robert Usherwood, Luke Hall, Thomas Jameson, John Usherwood, William Wood and George Tully.

 

The William was built in Whitby by Thomas Fishburn in 1793 for William Usherwood. She was lost in the Baltic, 28 Oct 1852. The Masters were Luke Hall, George Sheraton, James Robson, Edward Pennock, William Garbutt and William Phatnel Granger.

 

This collection was deposited in May 1968 by Miss Smales of Aislaby. They were transferred from the Shipping Wing to the Library and Archives in June 1981.
