Murgatroyd family of Manchester

Physical description: 15 Series
Immediate source of acquisition:

The papers were given to the Library in December 1983 and February 1984 by Miss E. M. Saunders, grand-daughter of Thomas Lomas Murgatroyd, who was son of Joshua Murgatroyd and Mary Lomas.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Lomas and Murgatroyd families were united by the marriage of Mary, daughter of George and Mary Lomas, with Joshua Murgatroyd in 1848, and further by the marriage of their daughter Mary Lomas Murgatroyd with her cousin Thomas George Lomas, son of her mother's sister Elizabeth and her cousin Thomas Lomas in 1898.

Both families were Methodists. George and his brother Thomas, having come to Manchester from Derbyshire, joined London Rd. Sunday School and all George's children were involved as Sunday School teachers.
