The 1st-21st Annual Reports of the Medical Officer or Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum (variously titled of Salop, or Salop and Montgomery and the Borough of Wenlock, or the Boroughs of Much Wenlock, Shrewsbury, and Oswestry)

 

With a note in the front:

 

'To the County of Salop for use in the Judges Lodgings from Mr. Layton Lowndes, Chairman of the Sessions'

 

The Medical Superintendants were: Richard Oliver M. D., J. Bayley and H. Rooke Ley

 

During the Asylum's first few years of existence it went through several administrative changes, these changes are reflected in this first volume of annual reports:

 

This volume contains:

 

1st Annual Report of the Medical Officer of the Salop Lunatic Asylum [it would seem that the Medical Officer was the Medical Superintendent, as by 1847 the same man is being referred to as the Medical Superintenent in Reports]. 1845. It is a very basic overview of the patients activities (dietary, admission and discharge information) and the Hospital's development.

 

2nd Annual Report of the Medical Officer of the Lunatic Asylum for the Counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the Borough of Much Wenlock, 1846. It includes detailed information including the Return of Insane Persons in Salop and Montgomery, the status, age, duration of malady, occupation, level of education, causes of malady, number of attacks of malady, causes of death, and forms of malady of patients; but still as part of the Medical Officers Report alone.

 

3rd Annual Report of the Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, for the Counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the Borough of Much Wenlock. 1847. It holds detailed information including the Return of Insane Persons in Salop and Montgomery, the status, age, duration of malady, occupation, level of education, causes of malady, number of attacks of malady, causes of death, and forms of malady of patients. It also has an account of all monies received or paid by the treasurer

 

4th Annual Report of the Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, for the Counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the Borough of Much Wenlock. 1848. This includes detailed information including the Return of Insane Persons in Salop and Montgomery, the status, age, duration of malady, occupation, level of education, causes of malady, number of attacks of malady, causes of death, and forms of malady of patients. It also has an account of all monies received or paid by the treasurer. It also includes a supplement, an abstract of the account of the receipts and payments in respect of the erection, furnishing and c.

 

5th Annual Report of the Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, for the Counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the Borough of Much Wenlock. 1849. This report continues to develop sometimes omitting some items but generally developing with the addition of more and more accounts (salaries and wages, consumption, patients work completed, balance of financial contributions, provisions, necessaries, dispensary, clothing and bedding, kitchen and domestic furniture, miscellaneous items, garden and piggery), repairs, building, maintenance) there is even a summary of the cost per head of maintaining a patient for that year.

 

6th Annual Report of the Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, for the Counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the Borough of Much Wenlock. 1850

 

15th Annual Report onwards includes everything in the previous reports with the addition of the Report of the Committee of Visiting Justices

 

18th Annual Report onwards has the additional Report of the Commissioners in Lunancy

 

7th-19th Annual Reports of the Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, for the Counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the Boroughs of Much Wenlock, Shrewsbury and Oswestry. 1851-1863 (See Admin. History Field)

 

20th-21st Annual Reports of the Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, for the Counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the Borough of Much Wenlock. 1864-1865. These reports have the format of the previous reports
