Description:

Correspondence of Alfred Bache with John Taylor Ewen (1863-1942) MIMechE on an application for employment. Containing printed testimonials in favour of Ewen, noting his work on the construction of the Forth Bridge, and a letter of Professor Thomas Hudson Beare (1859-1940) of Heriot-Watt University.

 

Ewen was a successful candidate, engaged mainly on the preparation of research committee reports. This file contains some additional personal information on the death of his father, his proposal as a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and on his eventual departure. Ewen left engineering to become an HM Inspector of Schools, retaining an interest in the educational activities of the Institution. Bache's statement on Ewen's candidature with the Science and Art Department is preserved here.
