Title: | Catalogue of the deeds and papers of WINSTANLEY of BRAUNSTONE |
Description: |
This collection of deeds and other documents has been deposited in the Leicestershire County Record Office on indefinite loan by Mr. Clement Winstanley of Andover, Hants. It is mainly comprised of deeds relating to the Braunstone area, on the west side of Leicester. The manor of Braunstone was held by the Hastings family from the middle of the fifteenth century but, ruined by their support of the Royalist cause, they sold this in 1650 to James Winstanley, a Parliamentarian lawyer from Lancashire. Winstanley consolidated his position by obtaining property in neighbouring parishes and elsewhere, and also by acquiring the Recordership of Leicester in 1653 and holding it until 1662 when he refused to conform. Out-county deeds present in this collection are largely the result of family alliance - for instance the Cambridgeshire deeds stem from the marriage of James' son Clement to Catherine Willoughby whose sister Lettice married and outlived Sir Thomas Wendy of Wendy, Cambridgeshire, the property coming to the Winstanleys on her death. The occurrence of several Lancashire deeds is explained by the marriage of Clement's son James, M.P. for Leicester, to Frances the daughter of James Holt of Castleton, Lancashire. This James' son, also a James, and High Sheriff of Leicestershire, married his cousin Mary (both great-grandchildren of the James Winstanley who bought Braunstone). Their son, Clement, also a High Sheriff of the county, and builder of the present Braunstone Hall (c.1775), married Jane Parkyns, sister to Lord Rancliffe; their son Clement died in 1855 a bachelor, and so the ownership of the Winstanley estate passed, (as he had outlived his contemporary relatives) to the second son of his third brother, James Beaumont, who also died unmarried seven years later; whereupon the inheritance went to his sister Anna Jane, the wife of Commander Ralph George Pochin, R.N., J.P., a member of the Pochin family of Barkby, Leicestershire. By deed of gift their son, Richard Norman, succeeded to the estate in 1904, assuming the name of Winstanley. In 1925 the Winstanley land in Braunstone was largely acquired by the Corporation of Leicester for housing development and ten years later it was brought within the city boundary by virtue of the County of Leicester Review Order 1935.
