Administrative / biographical background:

Bethesda Chapel was Congregational. The Chapel in 1835 stood behind the old Truro R.D.C. Offices. A new Bethesda Chapel was built in 1857 which was sold in 1932 to become the Truro R.D.C. Offices.

An Independent Church was first formed in Truro in 1761 during the ministry of the Revd. Samuel Walker, curate of St. Mary's Church, Truro, (1746-61). After his death some of his followers, known as 'Walkerites' took the Old Cock Pit which opened for worship 24 March 1769. Those who worshipped there were known as 'Cockpitarians' or 'Walkerites'. From that arose the first official Independent Church of Truro which began 25 April 1770 under its Minister, the Revd. Peter Sampson, who remained there fifteen years. In 1776 the Bethesda Chapel was erected and the Church became Congregational.)
