This collection was deposited on loan by David Chapman of Virginia Water, Surrey in December 1946, it was formerly belonging to the library of J J Chapman and Judge E H Chapman. Richard Weatherill was, like his father George and sister Mary, a noted Whitby artist, specialising in oils. He was an enthusiast for shipping from his youth, and in the preface to The Ancient Port of Whitby and its Shipping notes that its genesis lay in sociable pipes with gentlemen of seafaring experience and captains of the port and the wish to accurately record details of vessels. The book was published in Whitby in 1908. |
