This volume shows Captain John Coats' voyage accounts for the ships Benjamin and Mary, Free Briton and Esk. Also contains a rutter consisting of remarks on the approach to Stockholm harbour and general comments about conducting business in Stockholm. At some later stage in the volume's history (probably before 1850) the empty spaces in the volume have been filled with culinary recipes, initially by reversing the volume and entering recipes from the "back", but eventually by using the spaces on half-filled pages.

Administrative / biographical background:

The barque Benjamin and Mary was built in Newcastle in 1782 and was owned by John and Ingram Chapman; the ship Free Briton was built in Whitby in 1785; and the ship Esk was built by Thomas Fishburn of Whitby in 1790 for John and William Chapman.

 

This volume was deposited in August 1982 by Mrs E W Holliman of Watford, Hertfordshire.

 

The volume was handed down in the depositor's family, her great-grandmother being born Margaret Coats, possibly the daughter of John Coats born in 1847.
