Title: Portland of Welbeck (4th Deposit): Deeds and Estate Papers
Description:

This collection consists chiefly of property deeds and leases, wills, settlements, estate and legal papers relating to the Shrewsbury, Cavendish, Ogle, Holles, Harley and Bentinck families over several centuries, mostly before 1879. There are estate and household accounts and correspondence, and documents on a wide variety of topics including manorial rights, minerals, forests, ecclesiastical affairs and charities, etc. The properties are scattered through some twenty nine English counties, with major groups for Nottinghamshire and Northumberland; the latter comprises a good series of mediaeval deeds for the Ogle family estates. There is also material for the Harleys' ancestral estates in Herefordshire and the Welsh borders.

The 18th century estate and household accounts for Welbeck complement those found in the Portland of Welbeck (5th Deposit) also in Nottinghamshire Archives. They include a series of accounts for the alterations to Welbeck Abbey by Henrietta, Countess of Oxford, in 1745-54 (DD/4P/70/55), and a single account for the landscaping of the grounds under the direction of Humphry Repton in 1795 (DD/P/58/122). There is also a series of items documenting the creation of Clumber Park out of Sherwood Forest by the 3rd Duke of Newcastle in 1706-11 (DD/4P/75/61-79). Amongst the 19th and 20th century estate papers are records of Troon Harbour in Ayrshire, Scotland, and its associated collieries (DD/P/77/1-33), and three volumes documenting the Welbeck estate fire brigade between 1896 and 1946 ( DD/4P/86/1-3). Two items of note are a warrant of Edward III relating to the ransom of David II of Scotland in 1373 (DD/4P/66/1), and papers about the prosecution of the Nottinghamshire antiquary Dr Robert Thoroton for his over-zealous persecution of Quakers in his role as a JP in 1677 (DD/4P/67/7-8).

Administrative / biographical background:

These documents relate to estates developed from the nucleus originally built up by Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury ('Bess of Hardwick') in the late 16th century, and subsequently passed down to Sir Charles Cavendish (her son by her third husband) and then to his son Sir William Cavendish, subsequently Earl and 1st Duke of Newcastle. The estates were further augmented by marriages into the Holles family (Earls of Clare) and the Harley family (Earls of Oxford), and eventually inherited by the Dukes of Portland. The records were held in the Estate Office at Welbeck Abbey until their deposit in the Nottinghamshire Records Office (now Nottinghamshire Archives) in 1966 (Accession 689).

Some of the mediaeval charters have been endorsed with the date 20th July 1725 and with the initials of Humfrey Wanley, librarian to the Harley Earls of Oxford, and they are doubtless some of those referred to in Wanley's diary (ed. Wright, 1966, vol.2, p.364): '20 July 1725. My Lord sent in a large parcel of old Deeds or Charters, lately brought-up from Welbeck; which will be all marked with the Date of this Day'. The presence in this collection of several other charters and wills, etc., which have no apparent connection with the rest of the family archives prompts speculation as to whether these were collected by the Harleys simply for their antiquarian appeal?
