Administrative / biographical background:

The 2nd Lord Ellenborough, afterwards 1st Earl of Ellenborough, purchased the Manor of Southam and lands in Brockhampton, Bishop's Cleeve, Woodmancote, Swindon and elsewhere from the Bagehot - Delabere family, the Rev. Charles Coxwell and others in 1833 (D1637/T31, T32), the Manor of Oxenton c.1839-1849, the Manor of Prescott and lands in Prescott from the Peacey family, 1849-1866 (D1637/T20-22) and lands in Woodmancote, 1866 (D1637/T3).

The records in this collection fall into two groups, the first and larger being those of the estate, with some family records of the Bagehots and Delaberes. The Bagehot family held property in Prestbury, while the Delabere family held the Manor of Southam after its grant to Richard Delabere in 1608/9 (E.18). The two families were linked by the marriage of William Baghott and Anne Delabere in 1684 (pedigree of Delabere family in D1637/T32 and marriage settlement in D1637/T28). It was William, the second son of this marriage, who was the first Bagehot Delabere, assuming the name and arms of Delabere on the death of his maternal uncle in 1764. It was, however, not until the failure of the male line in the late eighteenth century that the family was officially known as Bagehot Delabere. The son of Jane (née Bagehot Delabere) and Thomas Edwards, the Rev. John Edwards, Vicar of Prestbury, obtained a royal licence in 1879 to take the surname Bagehot Delabere. (Delabere pedigree in D1637/T32 and Visitation of Gloucester, 1682-3).

This group also contains medieval records of the Manors of Prestbury and of Oxenton with Castle Combe [Wilts.] The latter came into the hands of the Scrope family and later to Sir John Fastolf. One of the heiresses of Robert, Lord Tiptoft (or Tibetot) who was seized of the Manor of Oxenton, married Roger 2nd son of Richard, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton [Yorks.]. The second Tiptoft heiress married Stephen, third son of 1st Baron Scrope, who became in her own right lord of Bentley near Doncaster [Yorks.] and of Castle Combe, Wilts. The widow of Stephen married Sir John Fastolf in Ireland in January 1409 (D.N.B.). A letter from the antiquary William of Worcester is also to be found in this group (M 13). He was in the service of Sir John Fastolf as his secretary and was sent to hold courts at Castle Combe.

There are few records in this group besides estate records relating directly to the Ellenborough family.

The second group consists of records of families related to the Bagehot Delabere family by marriage. A pedigree found with D1637/T32 helps to elucidate these relationships. There are the Hoby family of Badsey, Worcs., linked by the marriage of Richard Delabere and Margaret Hoby, 1608 (marriage settlement, D1637/F9), the Neale family of Bedfordshire and Essex linked by the marriage of Kennard Delabere and Hester Neale (before 1734, pedigree in D1637/T32) and the Stephens family of Upper Lypiatt linked by the marriages of John Delabere (1640-1691) and Anne daughter of John Stephens and of William Bagehot Delabere and Hester, daughter of Thomas Stephens of Upper Lypiatt (married at Old Sodbury, 1726). This group also contains a grant of arms to the Baron alias Barne family of Essex (F 11). While this document seems to be of the same group as the Neale family, no evidence has been found for any relationship.

There are also a few miscellaneous records which do not seem to relate to either of the above family groups.
