Administrative / biographical background:

A church school was opened in Amble in 1872. Before the end of the century the buildings were too small for the number of pupils so a new school was built in Dovecot Street. It was opened in 1899 and called the 'Medd Memorial Schools' in memory of the first vicar of Amble, Rev. Medd. It became a junior school in 1936 and an infant school in 1954. The school continued as an infant school until its closure, when it became the Dovecot Centre.
