The diary begins with Moss's departure from Southampton for a camp near Rouen, France.

 

"Fatigue at 12.30 pm, Docks. Found carrot and Sweed [sic] In Stew (extraordinary) unloading "M120". when will the ship get empty, Damn her..."

"...shelled at 9 a.m. one bursted on Parapet, hit by pieces of Dirt thought birthday had come. No dinner. (asleep). Shelled again 6.30 p.m. 4 men wounded 7 men wounded by Trench Mortar (Bad Day) No News. No wash..."

"Inspected by Mr. Asquith 2.30pm who made short speech in which he praised & conveyed thanks of King & people..."

"OH. what a terrible night. I wondered if I would ever get Thro: The Gas, terrible but such a pleasant Taste & smell, somewhat sickly. Thank God we had "Smoked Helmets" or they wl'd have had us groggy...Aeroplane Fight 7 a.m. our Fellow fetched the "G" down...but.... managed to get hit by a shell which set the Plane on Fire, which made him come down rapidly close to our Trench. I wonder if he was killed, lucky if he escaped for the machine exploded..."
