Administrative / biographical background:

Until 1867 Wallington was a Hamlet within the civil parish of Beddington. Both were part of the Croydon Poor Law Union and from 1875 the Croydon Rural Sanitary District. The Urban District Council of Beddington & Wallington was formed in 1915 to be followed in 1937 by full status as a Municipal Borough.. In 1965 the Municipal Borough merged with Carshalton UDC and the Borough of Sutton & Cheam to form the London Borough of Sutton.
